Grocery Department

The grocery department consists of 517,737 square foot of warehouse space and operates out of 95 doors. Over 13,000 full case items are stocked in the grocery department which includes regular grocery items, supply items, seasonal items, and slow moving items.

The grocery department currently employs over 300 employees and operates three shifts seven days a week. Over 700,000 cases are shipped on an average week and over 500 trucks are loaded weekly. Selectors are held to 95% daily production standard with an accuracy rate of 99.5%.

The warehouse uses state of the art technology and uses Retailx as the Warehouse Management System. All fork lift operators work using an RF unit on the lift that directs each move. Orders are pulled using Voccollects voice directed selection. Loaders use handheld RF units to load trucks with an in-house loading program.

MDI is currently partnered with LMS Intellibound to handle all receiving appointments and unloading. All appointments are made on-line; thus, utilizing technology to the fullest.

Frozen Food Department

The frozen food department consists of 198,000 square feet of warehouse space and operates out of 32 doors.  The frozen department stocks 4987 full case items which includes regular frozen items, deli/bakery items and ice cream.

The frozen food department currently employs over 120 employees and operates three shifts seven days a week.  Over 375,000 cases are shipped on an average week, and over 120 trucks are loaded weekly. Selectors are held to 95% daily production standard with an accuracy rate of 99.5%.

Perishable Department

The Perishable Department consists of three commodities – produce, meat and dairy. There are 1,095 produce items, including floral, organic, and specialty items that require five different temperature zones. Dairy has 1,220 items and meat consists of 1,577 items in two temperature zones. All produce is inspected by on-site inspectors as well as a USDA inspector.

Over 475 loads of produce, 136 loads of cross-dock items, 90 loads of milk, and 40 loads of “pre-cut” meats are received each week.

The perishable department employs over 150 employees and operates seven days a week in 200,000 square feet of warehouse space.

Meat Department

MDI provides a full service meat department to handle customer’s needs. MDI offers a full line of select, select Angus, and choice beef products; three fresh chicken programs; fresh fish and frozen fish; and national and regional packaged meat lines. MDI also offers case ready program with a complete line of beef, pork, grind, hostess, and sausage programs (see case ready).

MDI is proud to be CoOL (Country of Origin Labeling) compliant. MDI offers experienced buyers, merchandisers, and qualified inspection teams.

Produce Department

MDI offers a full service produce department. Also, MDI offers cut and potted floral programs and has two separate floral storage rooms on-site. Organic, Hispanic, and Vegetarian programs are offered to all customers. MDI has six different temperature zones and has 14 banana ripening rooms.

Produce is received into MDI seven days a week with qualified and certified inspectors on-site.

Mezzanine/Non-Foods

The mezzanine department carries over 15,000 SKU’s including: health and beauty products, general merchandise, spices, candy, tobacco, cigarettes, and seasonal candy. Of the 1,000,000 square feet of warehouse floor space, the mezzanine takes up approximately 68,217 square feet and is four levels high.

The mezzanine operates three shifts a day and has over 135 employees. The mezzanine ships out approximately 30,000 containers a week. Daily audits are done to insure accuracy. Selectors are held to 95% daily production standard with an accuracy rate of 99.5%. The warehouse uses state of the art equipment for efficiency in the handling of all products. In the mezzanine, turret trucks, fork lifts, and handheld computers are used.

Transportation Department

MDI’s transportation department has 206 tractors and about 450 trailers many of which are multi-temperature to assure that product is shipped at the appropriate temperatures. Most trailers are 53’ but other sizes are available depending upon the load.

The transportation department employs approximately 300 full and part-time experienced drivers with an average of 15 years of experience. Drivers travel to all states that MDI services and backhaul over 50% of all products received into MDI.

The transportation department will travel over 22 million miles in 2009.
